Ahmad Jamal (1930-2023) was recognized as an NEA Jazz Master and received the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award. He led one of the must influential jazz piano trios for over six decades. His music and arrangements greatly influenced Miles Davis and Bill Evans. Critic Stanley Crouch wrote, "Through the use of space and changes of rhythm and tempo, Jamal invented a group sound that had all the surprise and dynamic variation of an imaginatively ordered big band.” A.B. Spellman, of the National Endowment of the Arts, agreed: "Nobody except Thelonious Monk used space better, and nobody ever applied the artistic device of tension and release better."
