March Newsletter
A group of people who have never met before take their instruments out their cases, call a tune, and begin making music together. They might have different musical styles, hold different beliefs, perhaps not even normally want to talk to each other, but they negotiate their differences in real-time through the language of jazz. As Wynton Marsalis says, the negotiation IS the music. That is the Art of the Jam. This month, we are pleased to host Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) Teaching Artist Quentin Walston and his trio, as they present a multi-faceted event shedding light on how this is possible. Whether you are a performer or listener, novice or expert, you will leave this event with new insight into the infinite art of jazz improvisation. See the RSVP link below.
Many thanks to all who attended or participated in the sold-out Battle of the Big Bands last month. It took many people working tirelessly to make it happen, but it was sure worth it. Special thanks to the LJS officers, Mary Ann and Graham at Old Ox, Matt Trimboli, Jay Gibble, Steve Andersen, and our wonderful volunteers. Of course, none of this would be possible without our generous donors. March is our membership drive, so if you are not already a member, now is a great time to join.
Looking ahead, be sure to check out Tracy Hamlin's Sweet Jazz Festival on April 19th and 20th. It is going to be one of the biggest jazz events of the year. You don't want to miss it.
NOTE: The March jam at The Dell is moved back a week to Sunday, March 24th due to the St. Patrick's Day holiday. You can join us on the 4th Sunday this month.
