Tradition, from the Latin traditio: to give up, surrender, or deliver.

The jazz tradition is not just an objective canon of music slavishly replicated, but a living tradition surrendered to the next generation to maintain and also to extend and contemporize. The mission of the Loudoun Jazz Society compels us to welcome the youth in our community, which we do in our family-friendly jam session and educational programs through the Loudoun Library.

Last year, we furthered our commitment to passing on the jazz tradition with the first LJS Annual Scholarship. This scholarship provides vital resources to young adults dedicating their time to the study of the jazz tradition. You can make a difference in a young musician's life by donating to our 2023 Scholarship Campaign.

Also in the spirit of tradition, you can experience a tribute to the great Thelonious Monk at the Franklin Park Art Center this Saturday, March 4th. LJS has seen how rallying around a single event can create a new tradition such as our jam at Trungo's that paved the way for the open big band rehearsals, and led to the Loudoun Library's popular live music series. We hope that this event at Franklin Park Arts Center will lead to more jazz at our county's only dedicated performing arts center. I hope to see many of you there on Saturday.
