This past Wednesday, a few LJS officers and members attended a Visit Loudoun Music Committee meeting. From what I heard, it was a vibrant meeting that brought together many stakeholders in our county. You might be interested in a few of the ideas discussed that night.
First, county residents responded in a recent survey that they desire more diversity of live music. This organization grew out of this same desire and your support has helped build the jazz scene you see in the calendar below.
Second, attendees noted the lack of a major performing arts venue in Loudoun County. We are still watching Rivana at Innovation Station which is slated to include a "world-class performing arts venue" and hope to bring you to the table when that project is realized.
Lastly, there seems to be a desire for a major music festival (like SXSW or the Newport Jazz Festival). While that may be some years off still, you can help Tony Perry present the Leesburg Jazz Festival this summer. If you would like to volunteer (and receive a free ticket), send an email to loudounjazz@gmail.com.
I am encouraged by the discussion at the meeting, as it confirms the need for a Loudoun Jazz Society. If you too would like to make Loudoun County a destination for jazz music, you can become an LJS sustaining member.
In other news, we have extended the deadline for the LJS Scholarship to May 15th. This $1,000 scholarship is open to a graduating senior with an interest in jazz music. If you know someone who qualifies, please encourage them to apply.
