February Newsletter

Five years ago this month, a group of jazz musicians, educators, and fans gathered at Cooper's Hawk in Ashburn for the first meeting of what would become the Loudoun Jazz Society. I marvel at the how the bonds formed that day survived a global pandemic and have grown into a broader coalition of jazz enthusiasts. It seems fitting that our jazz society began during Black and African Heritage Month as we endeavor to lift up this music developed rooted in African American culture. Later this year, we will gather for a 5th anniversary celebration, but in the meantime you can enjoy a wide range of local jazz events this month.

We have joined forces with the Musician's Union and Franklin Park Arts Center to present a free concert on March 4th. Pianist Alfred Yun will pay tribute to one of the greatest composers and improvising stylists of jazz history, Thelonious Monk. You can enjoy a great evening of music, the camaraderie of the Loudoun jazz scene, and help us bring more jazz to our county's only dedicated performing arts center.

The Loudoun Libraries continue to present great jazz events featuring Jeff Cosgrove, Daniel Kelly, Quentin Walston, Anthony Stoika, and the Franklin Park Big Band. Matt Trimboli and I will lead a presentation at Brambleton Library on the music of Charlie Parker called "Bird Lives!" Come join us as we celebrate one of America's greatest musical minds.

Here's to the next five years of jazz in Loudoun County!
